With our central U.S. location, Corbin enjoys ideal weather virtually year around, while still experiencing the beauty of the changing seasons. Summer highs average 80 degrees, while winter month highs average 50 degrees.
Corbin’s average annual snowfall is only 13 inches (slightly more in higher elevations). However, in the event of inclement weather, The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is armed and ready for old man winter. Five new pavement sensors are strategically placed to report air temperature, precipitation (rain, sleet, or snow), wind velocity and direction, and pavement temperature.
These sensors are located in Corbin (I-75), Lexington, Northern Kentucky, and two sensors in the Louisville area. Cabinet managers receive the weather information via computer and use it to make anti-icing and deicing decisions.
Also, in cooperation with and support of Federal Highway Administration, an experimental bridge spraying unit was installed at Corbin on I-75 at US 25 on the southbound bridge. This unit allows the application of chemicals for both anti-icing and deicing activities. The University of Kentucky Transportation Center is conducting ongoing research on these projects.
